STATEMENT OF TEACHING PHYLOSOPHY
I believe that ultimately art objects teach, and that teachers should be seen as temporary necessities. It is my belief
that persons in teaching positions should do little more, aside from certain mentoring tasks, than help students learn
to rigorously explore their own vision in front of art. In this way the so called “teacher” defers their teaching
position to art.
However, this is not an affirmation of an “anything goes” philosophy of teaching. As a teacher I believe
it is my responsibility to set students strongly upon an understanding of what I, as their professor, sincerely believe
to be right. While they may not, in the end, fully agree, an atmosphere of open critical dialog will help students learn to
form and articulate their own values in a decisive respectful way.
